These beginner-friendly tips will help you build confidence, avoid common mistakes, and enjoy the learning process from the very first jump ring.
If you're ready to begin your chainmaille journey, here are five tips that I wish every beginner knew!
1. Start with the Basics (Yes, Really!)
I know it's tempting to jump straight into intricate dragonscale or other advanced weaves—they're beautiful! But learning the fundamentals first will save you a lot of frustration later.
Start with beginner-friendly weaves like 2-in-1 and European 4-in-1. These patterns help you understand ring placement, recognize weaving patterns, and build the muscle memory you'll use in every future project.
Think of these weaves as your training sword before you pick up the enchanted blade. Every chainmaille master started with the basics.
2. Practice Your Jump Ring Closures
One of the biggest differences between beginner and professional-looking chainmaille is clean jump ring closures.
Take your time learning how to properly open and close rings. Rings that close neatly create stronger, smoother, and better-looking finished pieces.

3. Invest in Tools You'll Love

Comfortable pliers reduce hand fatigue, improve your grip, and give you better control over each jump ring—especially during longer crafting sessions.

4. Don't Be Afraid to Start Over
Every chainmaille artist has pulled apart a project.
Sometimes a weave doesn't click the first time—or even the fifth. That's completely normal.
Undoing a few rings isn't failure. It's part of learning.
Each time you rebuild a section, you're training your eyes to recognize the weave and your hands to work more naturally with the rings. Before long, what once felt confusing will become second nature.
Remember, every masterpiece begins one ring at a time.
